Just had lunch at the Royal, service was great, friendly staff, good atmosphere and the renovations make it feel like a traditional good old pub.
My friend had the salmon, said the salmon was delicious, but would have been improved by a lemon wedge.
I had the 200g Eye Fillet, my request was medium rare and the chef did it to perfection, as soon as I started cutting the meat I could tell it was definitely medium rare. Accompanied by good crispy fries and a salad, and with a red wine jus, just perfect with a Pepperjack Shiraz.
Thanks Chef 🙂

Friendly staff, good service but they seriously need a new head chef!!
The fries are dreadful. The chicken parma was pretty good. Sadly the caesar salad was a real disappointment, the soft boiled egg looked like a reheated hard boiled egg, the anchovies were almost non-existent, the bacon was an overcooked crumb and the croutons were more like a think breadcrumb, the grilled chicken (an add on) tasted like poached chicken warmed on the grill, can't really describe it any better than cardboard with a tang of grill.

Called in as we were passing by for lunch without a booking and were seated straight away. It seems to be more for the older crowd (of which we are) so it had a good atmosphere for us.
Wife had the smaller porterhouse, and I decided to go a bit fancier and tried the Rib Eye (Wow)...It was cooked perfectly and was one of the best I have had in years !
Complements to all. The only thing that could have been better was the salad my wife said...just lettuce and some grated carrot, but still a great feed.

My wife & I were invited to the Royal for lunch. As we hadn't been there before we were looking forward to a new venue. The Royal has recently been refurbished. The new decor is fabulous & has an excellent mixture of Old World Charm with a few new fixtures. The overall charm & atmosphere in the Bistro far exceeds what you'd find in a hotel.
Beside the Bistro main counter you can view & select your steaks from the fresh meat on display in the drying cabinet, again something else you won't find in a suburban hotel.
For starters we had 4 entre's to share, raw tuna, scallop mornay, BBQ fried chicken bits and S&P calamari. All were presented beautifully & delicious to taste. The only problem, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs & unfortunately couldn't possibly have steaks.
We enjoyed lamb chops, grilled bara & fried snapper. All were freshly cooked, no precooked dishes here.
The quality of the dishes were all excellent & what you'd expect at an up market restaurant but the portions were generously sized & very reasonably priced.
Congratulations to the kitchen staff, waiters & management for creating a beautifully appointed excellent hotel.
We will definitely return & this time skip the entre's to enjoy the steaks.

I’ve been to the Royal Hotel Ferntree Gully several times now, and every single visit has been spot on. It’s honestly become one of my favourite places to grab a meal or a drink because they consistently get the basics right, great food, excellent service, and a relaxed, genuine atmosphere.
The meals are always impressive. I’ve never had a bad dish here, everything comes out fresh, full of flavour, and in proper generous portions. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in what they do. Whether I’ve ordered a parma, steak, or one of their specials, it’s been cooked perfectly every time.
The staff make a massive difference too. They’re friendly, quick, and actually seem to enjoy what they do, which creates a really positive vibe around the whole venue. They check in without hovering, the drinks come out fast, and nothing ever feels like a hassle.
The place itself is clean, comfortable, and welcoming, the kind of pub you can settle into for a long lunch, a family meal, or just a casual drink and feel right at home.
From my own experience, the Royal Hotel Ferntree Gully is one of the best-run venues around. They’ve nailed the mix of good food, good people, and good atmosphere. Couldn’t recommend it more highly.
Family Friendly
