Sunday 4/01/26. Was in the area and Baby Black was recommended by a local, however we were quite unimpressed.
Was surprised that the menu was rather pricey, more so than Melbourne CBD standards.
Service wasn’t good - didn’t get served until we called for attention. They did not let us know about the specials (which were more reasonably priced than the main menu) and we didn’t realise until it was too late.
Asked for table water but it did not come - had to ask again.
Food was average. Ordered the chicken and pesto toastie and French toast with seasonal fruits. Toastie was a little dry and could have done with more flavour. French toast was more like bread than French toast, didn’t even taste like brioche, not very buttery at all.
Mocha milkshake was terrible. It’s not the thick and creamy kind with ice cream. It was so thin, it was more like diluted iced mocha. Neither coffee nor chocolate flavour was particular prevalent.

Nice quirky place . They do highly want you to use the QR codes on tables to order . We were left to do that , as we had no one come by . The app didn’t allow you to write notes or minus stuff off the meal . That was the downside . Abit on the expensive side but nice food . Toilets clean

Amazing food 🥘. Coffee and breakfast both were very yummy.but customer service was rude and girls serving foods without smile and talked rudely. I think they should have smile on their faces and talked nicely.but we met owner, owner lady was really nice and talked very politely .definitely wanna go there again if they improve their customer service .

Driving in the area we happened to come across the cafe for a late brunch. Loved the antic vibes of this heritage house turned into a cafe. The food was exceptional and service courteous

Baby Black Espresso Bar has a nice aesthetic. Looks like an old house refurbished into a cafe. Has a lot of seating options, but internal seating where we sat was a bit cramped and was not very comfortable. We ordered a Big Breakfast, Chilli Salmon Scramble, Milkshake and a Cappuccino.
Pros:
- The aesthetic was nice to look at, including a wall displaying a lot of different countries' currency.
Cons:
- Seating arrangement was weird. Had to sit awkwardly with legs spread around table legs.
- Food and drink had a weird temperature issue. Everything was lukewarm.
- Cappuccino was too small and was gone instantly.
- Big breakfast was like any other big breakfasts out there but colder than normal. The small amount of mushrooms were the only part that actually tasted nice.
- The Chilli Salmon Scrambled eggs were average, chilli crisp oil was crunchy but had no spice. Salmon was the only good part.
- Overpriced, limited and not very interesting menu items.
- The milkshake cup was cold, the shake however was not.
Baby Black Espresso Bar is a pretty place. But not worth drinking or eating at.
